The moment to act

Martina Ptáčková was bullied. Now she teaches others when to fight back.

Martina was eight when she was first bullied. She decided not to ignore it.

She talked to her parents. They signed her up to a sport class that included self-defence.

Twenty years on she is an eight-times world champion in kick-boxing. She’s the first woman from Europe to win a black belt in hand-to-hand combat. She’s trained NATO soldiers in martial arts.

Now, she’s set her sights on bullying. Together with her brother and father, she runs bullying prevention and self-defence classes in schools. She recently addressed the United Nations. She’s about to launch a new book aimed at children who are being bullied.

I met her during a break in training to ask her how children can deal with bullying - and when they should fight back.
